Through the Lens: Our Fruitful Heritage
Next Upcoming Date: Thursday, April 18 2019
This elegant show of our local history and culture highlights the “early fruit district” of Vacaville and the Solano County Valley. It features the engaging photographs of William R. Nutting detailing the early orchard days of the valley along with stunning images of the Victorian homes of the 1880’s. They were shot as part of a book, California Illustrated No.1 The Early Fruit District. The author of the book was the noted horticulturist, Professor Edward Wickson, from the University of California.
Location: Vacaville Museum
Time: 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM
213 Buck Avenue
The exhibit includes stunning enlarged color photographs of the valley, hills and orchards along with 70 prints of the original images. Viewers can refer to maps of the area then and now, and be brought back to those early days with replicas of packing and cutting sheds. A smaller version of the packing shed is provided for inter-active activities for children. The centerpiece is a stunning artifact, a fruit wagon from the Martell ranch which will fill the Museum space with its own vibrant history.
Celebrating the early orchard days, the photographs portray the riches of the area. Immersing one’s self in this show, one can see why Solano County was known as the other “California Gold Rush”.
To enhance the exhibit, the Museum will have one special show-related event a month for the five-month run of the show. The events will be free and open to the entire community. Workshops and events will include: an illustrated talk, “The History and Evolution of Photography, April 27; a nursery talk, “Our Orchards of the Past and Fruit Trees of Today in Your Own Back Yard”, May 18; a Hands-on Workshop, Family Fun Day: Painting Murals and Tapestries, June 15; a Family Concert: Classical Music in the Museum, July 13; a Hands-on Workshop--Family Fun Photography Day: From Pinhole to Digital Camera, August 17;and a Roundtable Oral History Celebration: “Your Fruitful Heritage”, September 7.
