Downtown Vacaville history dates back to its first official recording as a township in 1851, and its eventual incorporation as a city in 1892. Vacaville is home to a community proud of its Central Valley history, as well as a past rooted in tradition. While the city began as a humble settlement of ranching and farm land, it became increasingly well-known by travelers as a stop for the Pony Express, a location along historic Route 40, and eventually a roadside oasis on I-80. Vacaville has grown and changed tremendously throughout its existence, and has proudly called itself home to cultural icons such as the Nut Tree. The city continues to embrace its agricultural beginnings and prides itself on being one of the most famous stops for visitors to the California Bay Area.
