Solano County Barn Quilt Trail
The Solano County Quilt Trail Project promotes community pride by creating a public art project to
display brightly painted quilt blocks on barns, homes, and businesses. We are part of a national
movement that connects communities by developing and contributing to an imaginary clothesline
of painted quilt blocks that stretches across the country.
A Brief History of Quilt Trails
Displaying brightly painted quilt blocks on barns is a new American art form inspired by Donna Sue
Groves. In 2001, Groves and friends created a block to memorialize her mom Nina, and hung it on
the family barn. Quilt blocks soon began to appear on barns, homes, and businesses across the
Midwest and Canada. The network of barn quilt trails now numbers over 3,000 barn quilts.
The Beginning!
Beverly Black and Jeanne Shaw come from a family of quilters and artists. They explored two of the
currently six quilt trails in California; Lake County Quilt Trail and El Dorado County Farm Trails Quilt
Trail Project and were inspired to create a quilt trail here in Solano County. A quilt trail in Solano
County encourages the public to explore our roads, farms, businesses, and historic places as well as
provide an economic benefit from tourism for businesses and farms on the quilt trail.
Beverly received an arts grant and used the funds to purchase materials needed to create wood
quilt squares. The first quilt square on the Solano County Quilt Trail is a two sided 2’ x 2’ and can be
seen hanging outside the Vacaville Art Gallery. Beverly and Jeanne are equipped and excited to
paint quilt squares that are 2’ x 2’ and 4’ x 4’
. The cost of a 2’ x 2’ is $200 and a 4’ x 4’ is $400.
Installation is separate if done by us. If you are interested in learning more about our journey and
possibly acquiring a barn quilt to display on your barn, home, or business and be part of the Solano
County quilt trail, contact Beverly at:
